Sign Up for My MG and YA Webinar

In July, I offered a picture book craft intensive, focusing very specifically on writing for the youngest readers. It was my first “specialized” webinar and it was an overwhelming success. (Thank you so much to everyone who listened to that one! I’m digging into critiques for it right now!) On September 15th at 1 p.m. Eastern (that’s next week already, can you believe it?!), I am offering a Middle Grade and Young Adult Craft Intensive webinar.

This 90-minute webinar will focus exclusively into the craft of writing fiction for the middle grade and young adult audience. I’ll talk about the marketplace, strategies to really make your novel stand out in the slush, character, plotting, tension, description, setting, voice, submissions, queries, and much more. It’s the first time I’ll be focusing exclusively on MG and YA, so even if you’ve taken one of my webinars before, you will be getting brand new content. You can sign up by clicking here.

The bonus of my webinars, as many of you already know, is that they include a critique from me for every registered student. For this one, I will read and critique the first 500 words of your MG or YA novel (one project per student, please). Instructions for submitting will come when you register for the webinar.

If you’re having scheduling issues with the time or date, don’t worry. By signing up, you will receive a recording of the webinar (emailed about one week after the original webinar date), you will have the same chance to ask questions as the other students, and you will still get your critique. So sign up even if the time or date doesn’t work for you!

    Hello Mary,

thanks for the link to your upcoming webinar. It looks to cover a range of great topics.

I noticed this webinar is also available as part of the ‘Writing for Children Kit’ together with your ‘Publish Your Children’s or Teen Fiction in Today’s Market’ webinar, only they are both listed as ‘On Demand’ rather than ‘Live Registration’. I’m assuming as On Demand webinars, the live Q&A and story critique are not available? I just want to make sure, as the discounted kit seems a treat, but it would fall short of the live session if it does not include these features.

    Thank you for your time,
    Victoria

I love your webinars! Mary, would you class a Chapter Book as fitting into the “MG” category for the purposes of this webinar? I know that Chapter Books are not MG, but they’re too different from picture books to be appropriate for a PB-oriented webinar. I’m wondering if this webinar will be a good fit, or if I should look for something more specific to Chapter Books. Thanks!

Victoria — Those are my general topic webinars…a children’s market overview. This is specific to MG and YA and goes more heavily into craft. It’s the first time I’ve done this particular one. Sorry for the confusion! And you’re right, critique and Q&A are only available for live webinars. The on-demand are just recordings from previous sessions and have no live participation.

Ishta — Sorry, but I won’t really be talking about chapter books in this webinar.

    Mary-

I am already signed up and excited about this webinar. I’m looking forward to your information on pitch and the marketplace in particular. It is intimidating how fast the industry seems to be changing right now and it will be interesting to get your professional perspective.

I was wondering if you would be willing to critique a query in lieu of the first 500 words?

Thanks for your time and for providing the class!
    Leila

Im trying to decide whether to wake up for the live version or go with the recording (Im in Australia so it’s at 3am my time). Looking forward to hearing you either way.

Hi Mary. I just wanted to thank you for the great webinar. I am at the early stages of my manuscript and am so happy to be able to use your presentation as a guide along the way. Thank you in advance for the 500 word critique. I am so looking forward to your feedback!

Oh no! I missed the registration! Boo hoo…. It’s not on the Writers’ Digest site any more. Kicking myself for letting the flu get in the way of something worthwhile. :(
